The Journey of a Cult tends to be characterized by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or figureheads introduce a new and transcendent idea offering a solution for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to challenge the establishment overseas. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. One individual, vulnerable, nervous, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest as a symbol, has stumbled through the lines and is being led away under a blanket for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Do you recall the start, when everything was fresh? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders offer a reboot, optimism ahead, love, salvation among a group with shared faith in the big idea.

What was this thing initially? Players celebrating feeling good. Tattoos. Strength. Determination. Elite male wellness energy. Oh sure, England’s players often say they don’t use the label, ironically as it’s denied, what did we see?

But we know its essence. It’s the batsman attempting a move so outrageous it’s beyond belief.
